Dr. Valerie L. Thomas, Ed.D., Ph.D.
Retired Mathematician

Past Assoc. Chief of the Space Science Data Operations Office (SSDOO), NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD. Served as a leader, responsible for the development and operations of data and information systems that support processing, management, archiving and distribution of space physics, astrophysics, and other NASA data and information. She also managed NASA's first wide area network, the Space Physics Analysis Network (SPAN) (1986-1990) and the NASA Automated Systems Incident Response Capability Team, served as Technical Officer of SSDOO's Hughes STX On/Offsite technical support contract, and chaired SSDOO's Education Committee. Since joining NASA in 1964, Dr. Thomas has served as the Asst. Director of the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC), Asst. Project Manager for the Pilot Land Data System (1984 - 85), and Goddard's leader for the multi-Agency (NASA, NOAA, AND USDA) Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE). From 1970 - 81, Dr. Thomas managed the development of state-of-the-art pipeline processing software data systems, which supported the launch of Landsats-1, -2, and -3 and served as an international expert on Landsat digital products. During 1964 - 70, she developed real-time quick-look processor data systems for the Orbiting Geophysical Observatory (OGO) and Multi-Satellite Operations Control Centers.
